D’Amato: Woodworth’s failed bill lit the fire of abortion debate

Which Catholic church does Laurel Broten go to, I wonder?

The Ontario Minister of Education sends her children to Catholic school. So I was surprised that she said Catholic schools shouldn’t be teaching students that abortion is wrong, since the provincial anti-bullying law forbids misogyny.

“Taking away a woman’s right to choose could arguably be considered one of the most misogynistic actions that one could take,” she said. “I don’t think there is a conflict between choosing Catholic education for your children and supporting a woman’s right to choose.”

Really? The Catholic Church is crystal clear about its belief that abortion is morally wrong. Ontario’s Catholic schools faithfully teach the beliefs of the Catholic Church, as they are set up to do. Shouldn’t the Minister of Education know that?

Broten’s blunder is just one of many brush fires erupting in Canadian public life since Kitchener Centre MP Stephen Woodworth lit a match under the highly flammable issue of the rights of the unborn last month.

Woodworth’s private member’s bill, asking for a fresh look at human rights for the unborn, was defeated last month. He may have lost in Ottawa, but he has definitely succeeded in getting people talking. (more…)
